Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

 


Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!  With the holidays in full swing and it being Christmas Eve I wanted to post this blog with an article from our latest contributor Yvette Sechrist McGlasson.  

Remember You are the Present: Managing Holiday Stress

For many of us, the holidays mean tradition.  A season of endless parties, friends and family gathering to enjoy tables laden with food and the excuse that this year, we will honor our resolutions.  With all the celebration, we somehow find unwelcome guests at the door and this year with COVID-19, it adds a whole new dimension.  Our perception of not being "enough" ushers in worries and fears that keep us engaged with "future stress," things that may never even happen and they keep us from being present.  It's like driving to a restaurant and not remembering how you got there.  What was to be a "merry and bright" season, has now become one with an incredible amount of pressure to perform.  It's that combination of pressure that results in stress, worry, anxiety and possibly even depression.

Think of a typical holiday movie.  Home Alone where they are in a rush to leave, the kid was left behind.  The Family Stone featuring a conservative girlfriend brought home to meet a liberal family.  If you've ever felt like an outsider, even at your own dinner table, this movie is for you.  Christmas Vacation, a mixed bag of everything dysfunctional, sprinkled with failed expectations, wrapped up in a card that reads perfection!

Here are some tips to put the joy back into the season!

  1. Take care of yourself.  That means putting YOU at the top of your "to do" list.  Give yourself 15-30 minutes of "me time" daily.
  2. Honor your feelings.  Do not sweep them under the carpet.  Suppressed feelings build like a volcano until one day the smallest thing causes and explosion.  Cry, scream, give yourself a time out...but feel!
  3. Embrace imperfection.  Set realistic expectations.  Cookies burn, fine.  Ornaments break, replace them.  Do your best and let everything else go.
  4. Repeat after me, "No, thank you."  We have this idea that we have to "do it all, be it all, solve it all, buy it all, wrap it all."  We don't.  We are not required to attend every party we are invited to.  This leads me to...
  5. Delegate.  I like to call it sharing, as in sharing the load.  Ask for help.  Make the meal a pot luck where everyone uses their own recipe.
  6. Manage Family & Friends.  This is actually more about managing how you are with them.  You can't change someone's behavior you can only change how you are with it.  If you get embarrassed when Uncle Joe gets obnoxious after he's had to many eggnogs, instead of completely avoiding him, catch up with him pre-eggnog.
  7. Stick to your budget.  You will thank yourself when the January bills come due.  Consider quality over quantity.  I've always loved Maya Angelou's quote"I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."
  8. Follow the 80/20 Rule.  Eat until you are 80% full.  Your waistline will thank you.
  9. Have fun!  Do something silly.  Laughter releases happy endorphins!
  10. Give Back.  There is nothing better than doing for those in need.  Back in the day, I loved per-paying someone's toll when driving across the Alley.  Doing for a stranger can open your heart to receiving a wealth of gratitude.

Finding Art with The Jesus Bible Book Review

The Jesus Bible

Encounter the living Jesus in all of Scripture. From the Passion Movement, The Jesus Bible, NIV Edition, with exclusive articles from Louie Giglio, Max Lucado, John Piper, Ravi Zacharias, and Randy Alcorn, lifts Jesus up as the lead story of the Bible.

I was given the opportunity to review this Bible and was pleasantly surprised by the beautiful cover and the stories in each chapter.  I have the book by my bed and my daughter came in yesterday and said what's this book, it's so pretty.  For a 13 year old to be interested in the cover means that it's a winner in my mind.  It makes me happy just looking at it and then reminds me to pick it up and read.  


I also loved the large verses they have highlighted throughout the Bible.  They have a green ribbon to mark your spot which is very helpful.  This verse from Ruth 2:12 was a great one to remember.

May the Lord Repay You for What You Have Done.  May You be Richly Rewarded by the Lord, The God of Israel, Under Whose Wings You Have Come to Take Refuge.



This month I'm working on reading the Chapter Luke as I saw a commercial saying that if you read once a day for the month of December you will read the story of Jesus and enjoy celebrating at Christmas time.




Filled with 66 book introductions, over 1,000 articles, and seven compelling essays on the grand narrative of Scripture that guide readers to treasure Jesus and encourage them to faithfully follow Jesus as they participate in his story, The Jesus Bible helps readers follow the thread of Jesus from Genesis to Revelation.

How often do your kids come home after school and you want to do something fun with them but they are not interested?  Have you ever thought of any creative ideas to suggest or ask your kids what they might like to do with you?

Ebook Excerpt: It has often been said that if children came with their own set of instructions, parenting would be a whole lot easier. While this might be true, it wouldn’t be as challenging, and it sure wouldn’t be nearly as much fun! Since there aren’t definitive instruction booklets for parenting and no two children are alike, parents have to wing it as they go along. This can create some incredible memories and make the job the toughest one a person will ever love. Engaging children in activities they love can be one of the most frustrating challenges facing parents today. Ask many parents and they will readily admit they have no idea what to do with their children once school is out, the homework is done and the chores have all been completed. The problem becomes even more troublesome during vacations and especially during that long stretch of summer. Of course, there are alternatives the kids love, but parents aren’t so fond of. The truth is educational, recreational and low-tech activities do experience constant competition from electronics like video games and television sets. While the “electronic babysitters” can work as a reward or an occasional activity, most parents just don’t want their kids sitting in front of a screen all the time. These activities are just not healthy for children on a constant basis. They do need to get up, stretch their legs and expand their mind. For some parents, the problem after school doesn’t involve computers or television programs. Their kids would rather “hang out” with their friends and remain unsupervised for hours on end. This is an issue that can also cause parents a great deal of angst. Just like television and video games, hanging out (with supervision) can be great once in a while. It is important for building socialization skills and helping kids unwind after busy days at school. Still, when this is the only after-school activity offered, it can be a big problem. There has to be better options for parents to try that kids will like, right? Well, there is. In fact, you’ll find with a little bit of exploration and some nudging, you can locate the perfect after-school activities to keep your kids engaged, enjoying themselves and staying out of trouble at the same time.

If you’re ready to take the after-school activity bull by the horns and find things for your kids to do that will actually engage them, read on. In this book, we’ll discuss the importance of having activities lined up, how to explore choices for younger children and even teens and even offer some ideas for the entire family. It is important to remember that after-school activities don’t have to be all solo ventures. If parents and other children can get involved, too, the time spent can become doubly valuable. Not only will youngsters be engaged in a healthy activity, they’ll also benefit from family time and bonding. There’s more to life once the bell rings than sitting on a couch or watching a computer screen. Help your kids find activities that suit them and you will be doing your children and yourself a huge favor.

Another fun way my family has enjoyed an afternoon is by doing a Scavenger Hunt.  We create a list of places to find and then at the end of the hunt there is a prize.  The kids run around the house or place that we are having the hunt and excited to find the next clue.
