Love No Matter What Book Review

I was given the opportunity to review Love No Matter What, When Your Kids Make Decisions You Don't Agree With, by Brenda Garrison with Insights from Her Daughter Katie.  Rating 4 out of 5.

I have three children and I always look for books that provide parenting tips or stories of how others handled a situation with their kids.  This book looked very interesting because, just like the title, I've had to love my kids, no matter what.  Each child of mine has their unique way of making choices. I know that my husband and I are an influence on their decisions at this point, but we've had our fair share of decisions we don't agree on.  I was intrigued by how she shared her struggles and than her daughter would discuss her thoughts.

This was one of my favorite quotes...
Our hearts should be open toward our children so we can do whatever we are called upon to do for their benefit--whatever says to them, "I love you no matter what."

The book comes from Brenda's own struggles with her daughter Katie.  She talks about her daughter wanting to move out and other families shared about their kids' drug and alcohol problems.

One section in the book was about Wrong Motives For Parents.  When you make yourself the primary issue, you are reacting from wrong motives instead of considering what is best for your child.  Your wrong motives might include some of the following:

*Pride--you want to keep your reputation and your child's reputation intact.

*Your expectations--you want your dreams for your child fulfilled, especially since you know best.

*Your needs--you want everything to stay the same so your needs will continue to be met through your relationship with your child.

*Selfishness--you want to parent the way you always have.  You don't want to find new ways to effectively reach your child.

*Comfort--you don't want your child to venture where you yourself are uncomfortable.

Have you found yourself having any of these wrong motives?  The nice thing about reviewing these is that I can reflect on how I am parenting.  If I find myself coming from a state of selfishness, then I can work on that and figure out a better way to make my request known.

Brenda shares that our stress is amplified when we try to look at our new situation through the old glasses.  Our new situation--one in which our child is making decisions we don't agree with--requires a new paradigm.  Our "normal life" is no longer what it once was.  We have a different life--not the one we expected, but one that God knew was coming.  If we are to be effective in it, enjoy it, and move ahead with our children, we must adjust our thinking.  But that is the essence of life, isn't it?  We never know what's coming next.

Many of the parents tips were very helpful.  It's very important in my family to establish our ground rules and to stay involved with our kids.  One of my favorite suggestions was to fill your kids with love.

Brenda's daughter Katie shared how once she was at a restaurant with her college friends and there was a family celebrating a birthday party.  Several of Katie's friends said that they had never had a birthday party and missed that experience.  Katie's parents always had birthday parties and deposited love in her heart.

Know that the love you deposited in your child's heart is still there, and they know it.

For families that struggle with their children's drug and alcohol problems, the book suggested finding a support group.  Teen challenge was recommended and it helped the families find counselors and a place for their child to learn ways to make better choices.

Brenda Garrison is an enthusiastic and authentic speaker and author.  She ministers to women in all stages of life but especially to moms--encouraging them by keeping it real and based on God's Word.

Are you on overdrive? 3 Ways to Tell

I always can tell when my kids are on overdrive, they fight more, they don't listen, and the simple things that they enjoy aren't as nice.  Sometimes I know I'm on overdrive when I can't remember what I did with my pen or why I just yelled instead of slowly made my request known.

Here are three ways to tell if you are on overdrive...
1.  You don't know what kind of weather is outside today.
I think I see a Heart in the sky!
2.  You haven't seen the latest flowers blooming in your neighborhood.
The wildflowers are so lovely this time of year!
3.  You don't remember what kind of trees you have outside.
Palm Trees captured my eye, there is just something magical about them!
So, I hope you will take a few minutes, and relax.  Overdrive is great to get things accomplished at times but too much and your headed for a disaster!

What ways do you cope with overdrive?

Father's Day is Almost here, what are you planning? 5 ideas for our Father's Day!

Father's Day is a celebration honoring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. Many countries celebrate it on the third Sunday of June, but it is also celebrated widely on other days. Father's Day was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.

My husband's birthday is 4 days before Father's day so he gets two celebrations within the week.  How do you plan on celebrating?

Here are 5 ideas:

1. Search Pinterest for Father's Day.   Here are a few suggestions I found via Pinterest...  http://pinterest.com/nicoleflothe/fathers-day/

2.  Make a special meal for your loved one!  My family loves Shepard's Pie, I think that would make a great dinner.  So simple, ground hamburger meat, place on bottom layer of square 9x9, add a layer of canned corn, then add mashed potatoes to the top.  The kids add ketchup on top.  Mmm!

3.  Rent a movie that has a great Father type story.  We have Netflix, so I found a few good oldies, Father of the Bride, Field of Dreams, and Mrs. Doubtfire.

4.  Hold hands, give extra hugs, and a few extra kisses!

5.  Ask your Father or Husband what he would like to do on his special day!  Sometimes just by asking you can sit back and enjoy the day spent the way they wanted and not stress over if they like what you did for them.

I hope you enjoyed my ideas and if you have some please share with me by leaving me a comment!

6 Healthy Habits that will benefit any Mother on Mother's Day

Simply Smile and Enjoy Life!

6 HEALTHY HABITS

BREATHE
When do you take a minute to really breathe?  Research says that listening to classical music and dimming the lights can help support your breathing.  Taking a nice deep breath and yawning can increase the oxygen to your body and make you feel better.

EXERCISE
It's funny to me to think that exercise boosts energy.  Exercise can be tiring but in the long run the benefits are amazing.  With regular physical activity you improve your muscle strength and boost your endurance.  And when your heart and lungs work more efficiently, you have more energy!

LOVE
Don't argue, love through your disagreements.  A study by Ronald Glazer and Jan Kiecolt-Glaser, in which couples were observed during disputes showed that a more loving, positive interaction had higher immediate immune function.  Dr. Gonzaga says, the key to positive conflict resolution is productively engaging in conversation.

LIVE
Live for today.  Sometimes we get so caught up in our past that we aren't paying attention to our present day.  Stop thinking for a moment and look around you at the many small blessings you have in your life.

PRAY
Good communication is essential to a good relationship.  If we start with a simple daily prayer, it opens up our hearts.  Some people pray in the morning to start their day and others finish their night with a prayer habit.

BELIEVE
"Changing habits is fundamental to changing your life. Everything you repeatedly do, say and think is as a direct result of your habits.  To enjoy permanent, positive change in your life, you must change your negative beliefs and their associated habits," says Tania Kotsos.  Believe in possibilities!

Why do kids love Spongebob? WW entry

Is the reason why kids love Spongebob because he has so much faith in his dreams coming true?

Is it because they can relate to how it doesn't matter what other people think of you being silly and laughter is so much fun?

Is it because children have the sweetest ability to love others and so does Spongebob?

Whatever it is, I sure do see a lot of smiles when Spongebob does his silly things in the cartoons.

What is your favorite cartoon character that makes you smile?

Original Customized Card Giveaway

I have always loved custom cards and created them for friends and family.  With my busy kids and life I no longer take the time but I still love getting them.  My daughter had a recent birthday and was given a card that you could tell was custom made.  So adorable!  I make new business friends all the time on Facebook and I met Kim Oliver from K.O Creations.  She has the most amazing customized cards.  This month she is my featured Artist of the Month!

Here are the questions I wanted to know about her...

1. How did you get into creating customized cards?
I became enamoured with card making from doing scrapbooking projects and not being able to find a personal card with true meaning in the retail stationary outlets. Bespoke Cards became a passion for me when I realized that I wasn't the only person unsatisfied with what was on offer.

2. What do you love about your work?
The true essence of card making for me is the end product & hearing about the way it was received and appreciated. Listening to my clients and getting snippets of lives & loves during the making process.

3. Do you have a favorite design or style?
Personally I love a number of styles...Vintage, shabby chic & steampunk all go hand in hand and tend to blend well for me.  I am open to other ideas & styles, because I do make Bespoke Cards designed for others to give to their loved ones.

4. Tell me about the steps involved in creating a customized card for someone.
The steps involved are simple, but very very important to getting a great card made just for you. The major key for me is listening...Really listening with your heart as well as your ears and reading between the lines. Secondly, finding out how long you have to design the card, sometimes I have been asked to have a card done in under a day (it's possible but definitely not desired for a great card) For best results I need to have around two weeks + if postage is required to get to the client. Then finally asking for any desired themes and ideas that they may have in mind themselves, then asking whether I have any creative licence with their ideas.  I check in with messages and pictures of the card during the design process, where possible, which enables the client to feel more involved and you end up with a card that is adored by the giver and the receiver.

Moon Over Edisto Book Review

I love reading and when I read the storyline of this book, I knew I would want to review it.  I used to live in North Carolina so when I get a chance to read a story about southern living I always look forward to the adventure.  What also caught my eye was the authors name, Beth Webb Hart.  My connection was made and I was intrigued to see what kind of story she had to offer.
“Moon Over Edisto is a rich, endearing, can’t-stop-reading book about what matters most, the power of love to transform the human heart.”
Dorothea Benton Frank, bestselling author of Sullivan’s Island

The past has come knocking on Julia’s door. Can she summon the courage to answer betrayal with love?
Julia’s best friend, Marney, broke up her parents’ marriage years ago. Now Marney shows up at her Manhattan apartment, asking the impossible—come home to Edisto Island to care for the half-sisters and half-brother she has never known. Marney, recently widowed, has lung cancer. There’s no other family to care for the children while she’s in the hospital following surgery.
Julia loathes Marney. But if she doesn’t step in, her own mother—who has never gotten over the divorce—will be called upon to take care of the children. So she heads to South Carolina to keep the peace.
On Edisto, she begins to reconnect with the place and the people and she’s been running from her whole adult life. There’s the local doctor who once stole a kiss from her on that very beach, and the siblings she’s never known—especially the sister with selected mutism named Etta who’s the keeper of nearly every family secret . . . including the very one that just might bind-up Julia’s long-since shattered heart.
I hope you take time to read Moon Over Edisto, I really was captivated by the story and it touched my heart.
Please leave me a comment and if you have a favorite book you like to share! Be sure to also check out this months giveaway, a beautiful designer Heart necklace from Sassy Lemonade.

Lovelier than Daylight by Rosslyn Elliott

I just finished reading  Lovelier than Daylight by Rosslyn Elliott.  It's funny, when I read books at first I wonder if I'll ever be able to finish them but then the story captures me and I can't wait to continue to read.  I guess that's the magic of a good book.  It was an intriguing story about a girl that was about to start college and before she could begin she finds her sister and her sister's children missing.  This tailspins the story into a mystery which combines alcohol, saloons and family beliefs from the 1875s into the mix.  I really loved in the book Description how they said, "If she can find a way for her head and her heart to be in harmony, a future lovelier than daylight awaits her."  I find this to be so true in life, when we aren't judging people but helping others we can build a stronger friendship and community.  The book has many ups and downs with struggles to find the children and the orphanages made my heart ache with love for my kids.  It makes me so thankful for the things we have at this moment.  If you enjoy a good romance or mystery than I would highly recommend this book!

Book Description

Susanna is a lady of principles who values family above all. Johann seems to represent all she despises . . . but appearances can be deceiving.
In 1875, Susanna Hanby is headed off to college in Westerville, Ohio, when she discovers her sister Rachel and Rachel’s children have disappeared. Susanna suspects that Rachel’s alcoholic husband knows more than he’s saying and she vows to uncover the truth.
Johann Giere is heir to a successful German-American brewery in Columbus, but longs for a career in journalism in New York City. When Johann signs on as the supplier for a new saloon in Westerville, his and Susanna’s paths cross and sparks fly. A fiery temperance crusader, Susanna despises Johann’s profession, but she cannot deny the attraction.
When Susanna learns that Rachel’s children have been indentured to orphanages in the city, she despairs that her family will be fractured forever. But Johann makes Susanna an offer she can’t refuse—pitting her passion and her principles against one another.
If she can find a way for her head and her heart to be in harmony, a future lovelier than daylight awaits her.
Lovelier than Daylight is a story of love and faith based on the Westerville Whiskey War of 1875, a dramatic real historical event featured in the 2011 documentary Prohibition by Ken Burns.
